Employers

Funded by the ERDF, The University of Nottingham is teaming up with local public and private organisations giving postgraduates the chance to engage in a variety of work-based projects.

The benefits are mutual

You get real work experience and skills (and some cash); the employers gain bright, capable individuals keen to make a positive impact within their organisation. Involvement can either be long or short term and covers a range of discipline backgrounds.

SMEs

The University of Nottingham placement programme, supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), allows us to offer small and medium-sized enterprises the opportunity to work with high calibre postgraduates on a project that will make an impact on the development of their business.

Our placement model offers:

  • a postgraduate student, who will work part-time with you for up to 200 hours for a period of between 3 – 6 months
  • funding from the ERDF, means you only need to contribute £4.00 (plus VAT) per hour towards the costs.

What does the SME need to do?

  • Provide a project brief. We ask that our postgraduates complete a strategic business project rather than day to day office work. The project can be anything from a scientific research project that needs specialist resources and expertise, to developing a marketing strategy for your business.
  • Demonstrate that the intended project will bring Gross Value Added through improved business performance.

The Postgraduate Placements team will:

  • advertise the vacancy, through the Postgraduate Placements Nottingham Portal and in relevant academic departments at the University
  • collate the applications for the SME to shortlist
  • arrange interviews and contact the applicants after interview
  • draw up contracts and manage all the paperwork
  • ensure students are eligible to work in the UK
  • reimburse the student at a competitive hourly rate
  • act as employer, managing the student employment through the University’s processes
  • raise an invoice for your contribution to the costs of the student placement
  • be available to provide guidance and support to you throughout the duration of the project.

Public and private organisations

The University of Nottingham is teaming up with a wide range of public and private organisations giving them the opportunity to benefit from the specialised expertise your talented postgraduates can bring to their work-based projects.

The project could be anything from a scientific research project that needs specialist resources and expertise to developing a marketing strategy for your business. The benefits are mutual – businesses gain bright, capable individuals keen to make a positive impact within their organisation and postgraduates get the opportunity to develop skills and experience in a non-academic environment.

Our placement model offers:

  • Part-time based placements of up to 15 hours a week or
  • Full-time 3 month internships.
