Project Title: Valorisation of brewers spent grain: Anaerobic digestion feasibility study
Project Description:Our brewery currently allows Brewers Spent Grain (BSG), to be collected by local farmers for animal feed from the point of production on a no charge basis. As part of the companys future expansion plans, a feasibility study on the utilisation of BSG in an anaerobic digestion process is required to determine the benefits (energy and heat provision) and potential barriers to implementation. Company benefits, if implemented and dependent on scale, could result in improved environmental performance (CO2) and sustainability.

How this will be achieved:
  • Audit (of waste production and energy requirement)
  • Literature review of BSG and anaerobic digestion (AD) to include process design aspects and operational conditions, predicted biogas yield, digestate considerations etc
  • Laboratory based compositional analysis: basic characterisation of BSG.
  • Cost benefit analysis
Key Areas of Work & Outcomes of Placement:
  • Desk based literature review
  • Laboratory analysis
  • Anaerobic digestion technology benefits and barriers to implementation
